KRWG-TV expands free over-the-air service to El Paso: What Changes Next

KRWG Public Media has extended KRWG-TV’s free broadcast signal into the El Paso area, making the public television station available over the air on Channel 22. The July 24 announcement changes how El Paso viewers can receive KRWG-TV: households with a suitable television antenna no longer need a cable or satellite subscription to watch the station’s broadcast lineup.

The immediate next step for viewers is technical but straightforward. KRWG-TV is asking El Paso-area residents to connect an over-the-air antenna and run a channel rescan through their television’s settings. That process allows the set to detect Channel 22 and add KRWG-TV to its available channels. Existing antenna users will also need to rescan rather than assume the newly available signal will appear automatically.

KRWG Public Media General Manager Adrian Velarde said the organization views the Borderland as one community. He noted that many El Paso viewers had received KRWG-TV through cable or satellite providers for decades; the over-the-air expansion is intended to make the station’s news, educational resources and PBS programming available without a pay-TV subscription.

The service includes KRWG-TV’s full lineup: PBS programs, educational children’s shows, local news and public-affairs programming addressing issues and stories across the Borderland. KRWG-TV has served southern New Mexico for more than 50 years, and the station described the El Paso expansion as an extension of that regional public-service mission. Its broader coverage area includes Las Cruces, Alamogordo, Truth or Consequences, Silver City, Lordsburg and Anthony in New Mexico, as well as Clint and other far west Texas communities.

For viewers, the practical change is an additional free local television option and direct antenna access to programming that previously may have required a distributor relationship. For KRWG-TV, the expansion potentially broadens its reachable audience across El Paso and reinforces its identity as a Borderland station rather than a service confined to southern New Mexico.
