Spectrum News Relaunches NECN as Local News Push Spans Cable, FAST and YouTube
New England cable expansion joins Gray Media’s FAST rollout and Spectrum News’ digital-first California initiative.
Spectrum News relaunched NECN across New England as Gray Media expanded on Local Now and Spectrum News introduced a YouTube-first California reporting initiative, illustrating local news’ widening distribution across cable, FAST and connected TV.

Spectrum News has relaunched NECN as Spectrum News NECN, a 24-hour regional network covering Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. The network remains available through NECN’s existing distributors and is expected to reach additional viewers in coming months. Spectrum customers can also watch through the Spectrum News app, Xumo Stream Box, Roku and Apple TV. (tvnewscheck.com)
Veteran New England journalist Matt Reed is the primary anchor at launch and will anchor a new morning program later in 2026. Senior News Director Teisha Parker leads the network, which plans to hire additional employees across New England. Spectrum News NECN will deliver local headlines every 15 minutes and weather forecasts every 10 minutes “on the 1s,” extending a regional cable-news brand that originated in 1992. (tvnewscheck.com)
The NECN relaunch follows two other distribution moves showing how local-news programmers are combining conventional television, free ad-supported streaming television and digital platforms. Gray Media is adding 111 news feeds from its local television outlets to Allen Media Group’s Local Now app during September. The agreement lifts Local Now’s lineup above 600 streams, including 370 standalone news channels and more than 220 Local Now-branded regional services. Local Now is widely available on smartphones, tablets and smart TVs. (thedesk.net)
Local Now separately renewed its distribution agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery for FAST channels including CNN Headlines, CNN Originals, WB Crime Scenes, WB How To and WB At the Movies. Financial terms and any advertising-revenue-sharing arrangement were not disclosed. Although broader than local news, the renewal reinforces Local Now’s role as an aggregator where station feeds compete alongside national news and entertainment brands. (thedesk.net)
In California, Charter Communications’ Spectrum News also launched “More On That,” a digital-first reporting initiative publishing long-form work throughout the week on the Spectrum News California YouTube channel. A recap airs Thursdays on Spectrum News networks statewide. Senior Director of Production Seth Katz leads journalists in Fresno, Palm Springs, Sacramento and San Francisco, with additional staff planned for Los Angeles, San Diego and San Luis Obispo; Lisa Ling will contribute stories. ConsumerEXP analysis: Together, these moves make local journalism less dependent on one carriage path. Programmers gain incremental reach, distributors add differentiated live content, and advertisers gain more opportunities across regional cable, connected-TV apps, FAST services and YouTube. That model echoes New York Public Radio CEO Christy Tanner’s assessment that free streaming news can be profitable and that audiences increasingly expect trusted local coverage across television, phones, apps and YouTube.
