Television Companies Reset Leadership and Staffing Around Streaming and Local Media

WHYY’s appointment of Fred Vigeant as general manager of WPSU-FM-TV is the latest in a series of leadership and staffing changes reshaping television businesses. Vigeant will take charge October 26, leading WPSU’s television, radio and digital services across central and northern Pennsylvania. His appointment follows WHYY’s October 1 acquisition of WPSU from Penn State University, a transaction WHYY said preserves public-media service for approximately 1.5 million residents.

WPSU will retain its name and call letters and remain locally operated. Vigeant, previously vice president and chief audience officer at WITF in Harrisburg, will work with a leadership team that includes technology director Jon Widmer, news director Emily Reddy and content and audience engagement director Jeff Benzing. WHYY is also searching for directors of advancement and broadcasting and programming.

NBCUniversal, meanwhile, is combining executive succession with staffing reductions. Chris Wayland will succeed retiring NBCUniversal Local Chairman Valari Staab before the end of 2026. Wayland currently leads WBTS “NBC Boston,” WNEU “Telemundo Boston” and NBC Sports Boston. He will inherit a portfolio spanning 11 NBC-owned stations, 31 Telemundo-owned stations, four regional sports networks, three national multicast networks and 17 free ad-supported streaming channels. Wayland and Staab are working together during the transition, ending Staab’s 46-year local-television career.

At the same time, NBCUniversal is eliminating several hundred Global Streaming Technology positions, including engineering and quality-assurance jobs. Most reductions are expected at Comcast’s European Sky operation, although U.S.-based NBCUniversal employees are also affected. The final total remains subject partly to employee-consultation requirements in the United Kingdom. NBCUniversal said the restructuring is intended to align resources with future streaming growth.

Disney is preparing a separate television reorganization under Disney Entertainment Television Chairman Debra OConnell. The plan, which remained under development, could eliminate hundreds of jobs while consolidating operations including ABC Entertainment, 20th Television, Hulu Originals, Disney Kids & Family, National Geographic Content, Freeform and ABC News around a more centralized, streaming-oriented structure.

Paramount CEO David Ellison has also reportedly selected HBO programming chief Casey Bloys to oversee streaming after Paramount’s pending Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition, while Paramount streaming executive Cindy Holland is leaving.

ConsumerEXP analysis: These changes show television groups concentrating authority across broadcast, streaming and digital operations while reducing overlapping structures and technology costs. The consequences extend from employees and executives to local communities, advertisers and distribution partners that depend on stable multiplatform television operations.
